Wikipedia defines bleed in printing as printer’s “bleed is printing that goes beyond the edge of where the sheet will be trimmed. In other words, the bleed is the area to be trimmed off. The bleed is the part on the side of a document that gives the printer a small amount of space to account for movement of the paper, and design inconsistencies. Artwork and background colors often extend into the bleed area.”
What is a good bleed area size?
Many Print Service Providers will use a standard 0.125″ inch printer’s bleed, or one-eighth of an inch for regular print jobs. For printed products requiring die-cutting, some may use a quarter of an inch bleed.
When to use a preflighting option:
Although if a user needs to add bleed, it is recommended to use preflighting software as the addition of the bleed needs to be done by a professional PDF editing program, because simply using scaling in not recommended to provide high quality documents to your customers.
